South Africa officially launched its Electronic Travel Authorisation platform on 12 August 2026. The ETA is intended to make eligible short-stay travel faster and more secure while strengthening document and identity verification.
The platform combines an online application, passport authentication, facial verification and automated risk analysis. Approved travellers receive a digital authorisation that can be stored on a smartphone.
Who can currently use the ETA?
The system was initially piloted for travellers from China, India, Indonesia and Mexico. Home Affairs has said that further countries will be added progressively.
Travellers should confirm their eligibility on the official ETA portal before making arrangements or relying on the digital process.
How does the process work?
The official process includes:
- Creating an online profile and verifying contact details.
- Scanning the traveller’s passport and uploading a facial photograph.
- Biometric matching between the passport photograph and the applicant.
- Automated passport-authenticity and risk checks.
- Digital delivery of the ETA after approval.
Biometric verification is performed again when the traveller arrives at the immigration counter.
Where is it initially available?
Home Affairs announced initial availability for travellers arriving at OR Tambo International Airport, Cape Town International Airport, King Shaka International Airport and Lanseria International Airport.
Land and sea ports are expected to follow as the biometric entry system is expanded.
Can visitors extend their stay?
A legitimate traveller admitted for up to 90 days may apply through the ETA platform to extend the visit for up to a further 90 days, subject to the Immigration Act and an approval decision.
The ability to apply does not mean that an extension is automatic. The applicant remains responsible for applying in time and complying with the conditions of their status.
Does the ETA allow employment or long-term study?
No. The current ETA is a travel-authorisation and short-stay mechanism for eligible travellers. It is not permission to work, undertake long-term study or reside permanently in South Africa.
Home Affairs intends to add more complex visa categories to the platform in future, but applicants must continue to use the correct immigration category for their intended activity.
What should businesses and travellers check?
Before travel, parties should confirm:
- Whether the traveller’s nationality and travel purpose are currently eligible.
- Whether arrival will be through a supported port of entry.
- That the passport and supporting information are accurate and valid.
- That the intended activities are permitted under the approved status.
- That any extension or separate visa application is submitted within the applicable time limits.
